Safety Tips
Last updated: 11 June 2026
Unfyltered exists to get you off your phone and across a table from someone interesting. Most meetings are exactly what they should be — but meeting anyone new deserves a little care. None of this is about being afraid; it's about being smart so you can relax and enjoy the conversation. In an emergency anywhere in India, call 112.
Before you meet
- Keep conversations in the app at first. Our chat keeps your number masked and gives you report and block buttons right where you need them. There's no rush to move to WhatsApp.
- Look for the verified badge. It means a human checked that the person's selfie matches their photos. It's not a background check, but it does mean the face is real.
- Do your own homework. A quick search of their name, workplace, or photos is normal and sensible. If details don't add up — job changes between messages, photos that look too produced — trust the doubt.
- Watch for money talk. Nobody you've never met needs a loan, an investment tip acted on, your card details, or an OTP. Money requests are the single biggest scam signal — report them immediately, even if the conversation was lovely.
- Video-call before a one-on-one date if you want to. Anyone worth meeting won't mind.
How number privacy protects you
On Unfyltered, your phone number is masked everywhere, for everyone — matches, hosts, event attendees all see +91 ••• ••• ••. The only way anyone gets your real number is if they send a number request and you accept it; then, and only then, both of you see each other's numbers. This is deliberate:
- You can chat, match, and attend events without ever exposing a number that's linked to your bank, your UPI, and your identity.
- If a conversation turns weird, blocking in-app actually ends it — they never had your number.
- You can also control who may even ask: in Preferences, set number requests to everyone, connections only, or nobody.
Our advice: keep chats in the app until you've met in person at least once and feel good about it.
First meetings
- Meet in public, meet in daylight (or early evening). A café in Indiranagar beats a quiet bar at midnight for a first meeting. Pick somewhere busy and well-lit that you already know.
- Tell a friend. Share who you're meeting, where, and when — and share your live location with someone you trust for the duration. Arrange a check-in call partway through.
- Own your transport. Arrive and leave on your own steam — your own ride, an auto, or a cab you booked yourself. Don't get picked up from home on a first meeting, and don't depend on them for the ride back.
- Keep your address yours. No home or PG address until trust is earned. "Somewhere near Koramangala" is plenty of detail for date one.
- Stay sober enough to read the room. Know your limits, and never leave food or drinks unattended — if a drink left your sight, order a new one. If you feel suddenly unwell, tell venue staff and get to a safe place.
- Leave whenever you want. Mid-coffee, mid-sentence, doesn't matter. You owe no one an explanation. Many Bengaluru cafés and bars will help if you tell staff you're uncomfortable.
At Unfyltered events
- The group chat opens 48 hours before — say hi, get a feel for the table, and you'll walk in knowing names, not strangers.
- Check in when you arrive. It confirms who was actually in the room, which protects everyone.
- Hosts are users, not Unfyltered staff. Most events are run by members like you. A great host will look after the table, but they're not security and they're not vetted employees. Curated events are marked as such.
- Events are public-venue plans by design. Be cautious of anyone trying to move a first meeting from a listed venue to a private address.
- If someone at an event makes you uncomfortable, you don't have to manage it alone: step away, tell the host or venue staff, and report the person from the attendee list afterwards. Reports cover offline behaviour too.
Report and block — how it works
- Block: from any profile or chat, tap ⋯ → Block. It's instant and mutual-invisibility: they can't see you, message you, or appear in your discovery, and vice versa. They are not notified.
- Report: from any profile, photo, prompt, message, or event chat, tap ⋯ → Report and pick a reason (fake profile, harassment, scam, underage, inappropriate content, offline behaviour). Add details — they genuinely help. Reports are confidential.
- Underage or child-safety reports jump every queue and suspend the reported account pending review.
- For anything you'd rather write out, use You → Help & grievances in the app or email grievance@unfyltered.com.
If something goes wrong
- Emergency (police, fire, ambulance), all India: 112
- Women's helpline: 1091 · Domestic abuse: 181
- Cyber crime (financial fraud, sextortion, online abuse): 1930 or cybercrime.gov.in
- In Bengaluru: 112 connects to Namma 112, Bengaluru City Police's emergency response — police reach you; you don't need to know the local station. The BCP Suraksha app offers an SOS with live location sharing.
- If a crime occurred, report to the police first — then report in-app too, so we can act on the account and preserve records. We cooperate with law enforcement on lawful requests.
